Kennedy served county with integrity

To the Editor:

I was taken aback by the news that John M. Kennedy, a Republican who resonates the gold standard of ethics, will resign as deputy commissioner of the Board of Elections.

Kennedy’s refusal to engage in unnecessary meanness is characteristic of his commitment to a more civilized, more accountable government.

His political acumen and courageous leadership held a fractured Legislature together during the fiasco over county financing of Dutchess Stadium, in the midst of economic chaos brought on by IBM downsizing in 1993. As chair of the Legislature, he promoted real and honest debate. He knew when to take a leap of faith.

The Board of Elections serves a serious public purpose. In a democracy, it ensures voters that elections are carried out in a legal and fair manner. The gritty work at the Board of Elections is neither glamorous nor entertaining.

We, the people, need election officials like Kennedy, who respect all people, who understand election law and follow it with integrity in fulfillment of their obligation to each and every one of us who believes in the system of self-government established by our great nation.

On behalf of citizens of good will, I offer non-partisan best wishes to John M. Kennedy.

Volunteers helped make holiday great

To the Editor:

I write this letter on July 5 to praise an activity held on the fourth. Henry Fernandez, president of the South Avenue Neighborhood Association, delivered holiday meals to our police, fire and public works employees required to be on duty. He did not forget our seniors at Eastman Towers. Twenty-five very happy people received a fantastic meal and a holiday cake. Thank you also goes to Gwen Johnson for her help and kindness. The folks at Eastman asked me to express their gratitude in helping them celebrate our country’s birthday. Henry and Gwen also recently planted some great flowers on the medians of South Grand Street.

A number of people from the South Ave. Association as well as others from throughout our community donated to thank our public servants and remember our seniors on this festive day. Thank you. I am proud to be one of many participants in the good works of the South Avenue Neighborhood Association.
