Lady soccer Foxes release 2008 schedule
Last week, the Marist women’s soccer program released its 2008 schedule. The Red Foxes will open the season on Aug. 29 at the Colgate Tournament versus Colgate and Temple before heading home for a match against Big East foe Seton Hall on Sept. 4. Marist will open the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of their schedule at Canisius on Oct. 3.
The Red Foxes, who are coming off the most successful season in program history, will play an even schedule with 10 home matches and 10 road matches. Four of the 10 home contests will be under the lights.
Following their match with Seton Hall, the Red Foxes will hit the road to face Atlantic-10 power Fordham on Sept. 10 in the Bronx. Fordham reached the A-10 Tournament final last season and was in the Northeast Region Top 10 for much of last season.
“It will be nice to play Fordham head-to-head during the regular season after playing them in the preseason the past couple of the years,” said Marist head coach Elizabeth Roper. “They had an excellent season last year.”
Marist will then take on St. Joseph’s before facing four straight Patriot League opponents from Sept. 19-28 (at Lafayette, vs. Lehigh, vs. Army, vs. Bucknell).
“We will see some formidable opponents from the Patriot League,” said Roper. “They have always provided a quality level of competition, and they will undoubtedly get us ready for our conference season.”
Marist opens up the conference season in northern New York against Canisius and Niagara before coming home to host Siena on Oct. 10.
They will step out of conference one final time to visit Ivy League power and regionally ranked Columbia on Oct. 12, and then host Fairfield and Iona on the weekend of Oct. 17.
The Red Foxes will then take on Manhattan and Saint Peter’s before hosting Loyola and Rider to close out the MAAC regular season on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, respectively. The Red Foxes fell to Loyola last season in the MAAC Tournament final a season ago.
“We have a competitive non-conference schedule that will prepare us for our conference schedule that continues to get harder and harder every year,” said Roper. “We will look to continue to raise the bar and get back to the conference tournament.”
Siena will host this year’s tournament beginning on Nov. 7.
Men’s lacrosse ends year as top face-off team
The Marist men’s lacrosse team ended the 2008 season as the country’s best team in the face-off circle, leading all 56 Division I teams with a 62.8 win percentage. Senior midfield Dan Needle (Baldwinsville) finished the season as the second-best face-off man in the country with a 63.5 win percentage. Only Danny Brennan of the national champion Syracuse Orange had a higher percentage.
Marist won 189 of 301 face-offs during the season with Needle winning 183 of those himself. The Red Foxes face-off win percentage is three ten-thousandths of a percent better than Notre Dame, which reached the NCAA quarterfinals this season. Marist won more face-offs than their opponent in 12 of its 16 games in 2008, including each of their last six games.
The Red Foxes went 3-13 in 2008, going 3-5 in the MAAC Lacrosse League.
Swimmer Piggott to transfer to Marist in ’08
Marist Director of Aquatics Larry J. VanWagner announced that Elizabeth Piggott (Staatsburg) will be coming to Marist and joining the women’s swimming and diving program in the fall of 2008. Piggott is transferring from Niagara University after one year as a Purple Eagle and will be a sophomore when the school year begins.
Piggott, who competes in sprint freestyle events, will be a business major and is looking forward to attending Marist.
“I chose Marist because it is close to home, and it is great for both academics and athletics. It’s a great place to be a student-athlete.”
A member of the Dean’s List during her year at Niagara, Piggott was also member of the National Honor Society at F.D. Roosevelt. She was a rower on the crew team at Roosevelt in addition to being a three-year varsity swimmer. As a senior, she was named the Swimming Athlete of the Year and was a member of the medley relay team that finished fifth at the New York State Championships.
