The Roy C. Ketcham Indians and Arlington Admirals softball teams both felt the heat in the sixth inning of a tie game on May 13. With the score 3-3 and the bases loaded, Ketcham right fielder Michelle Sasso stepped to the plate and drove a single to center field to lead the Indians to a 4-3 win at home, marking the second win for the Indians over Arlington this month.

Arlington’s Elayne Dombroski scored early in the first inning to stake the Admirals to a 1-0 lead, but neither team did any more damage until the top of the sixth inning, when Admirals Amy Weinberg and Allie Zamow scored on two bases-loaded walks by Ketcham pitcher Chelsea Boyes to give Arlington the 3-0 edge.

But in the bottom of the inning, Ketcham’s Suzie Karath led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch by Arlington hurler Emmalee Dolfi. Following that, Boyes made up for her walks with a home run to deep center that scored Jessica Syska and tied the game at three. Then, with the bases loaded in front of her, Sasso drove in Tori Thomas to give the Indians a 4-3 lead.

Boyes, who allowed seven hits over seven innings with five strikeouts, managed to get out of the seventh unscathed for the complete-game win. Dolfi, who gave up 10 hits, took the loss.

Boyes recounted her team’s first meeting with Arlington compared to Tuesday’s performance.

“They (Arlington) weren’t able to hit as well last game,” she said. “I thought they did a better job this time against us. We have confidence in beating a league opponent.”

Indians head coach Scott Satterlee said it was “all heart” that generated the comeback win.

Despite running into trouble in the sixth inning, Dolfi said her team fought hard.

“Sometimes you can’t really control what happens,” she said.

Indians catcher Amanda Macio said her team never lost hope.

“When we were down 3-0, there was a lot of pressure, but we’re good at coming back,” said Macio.

“Ketcham has a good defense. We were able to capitalize on a few throwing errors to put some runs on the board,” Arlington coach Nancy Schaeffer said following the game.

Ketcham’s record is 9-2-1 overall and 4-0 in Conference I-C; Arlington’s record is 12-5 overall 1-4 in league.

Arlington JV team thumps Clarkstown

Despite an overcast, chilly afternoon, the Arlington JV softball team managed to turn up the heat and beat Clarkstown South 19-6 at home on Monday, May 12 to improve to 3-6 on the season.

Arlington junior varsity head coach Jen Veronesi said that the team’s level of play this week was reminiscent of the their second game of the season, when they shut out Roosevelt-Yonkers 25-0 at home.

“I tell them (the players) to never give up,” said Veronesi.

There was no worry about that on Monday, as the team jumped out to a 17-3 lead after four innings. Standouts from the game included freshmen Shannon Antenucci, Alex Shellman and Jessica Colucci, who each went 4-for-4. Freshman Kim Tobin had a double and a triple.

Several of Clarkstown South’s runs came via overthrows from Arlington’s sophomore pitcher Kelly Gleason, to freshman catcher Marisa Thorbjornsen.

But it was Gleason’s strong play, including recording three force-outs in the seventh inning, that helped stem any Clarkstown comeback.
