Even while on spring break, the Arlington Admirals varsity softball team isn’t officially on vacation.
And they proved it with a 14-2 home win against Mamaroneck on April 14 that featured dominating pitching and plenty of hitting for the now 5-0 Admirals.
Leading performers for the day included senior Caitlin Schell and sophomore Jackie Macak, who each notched 3 RBIs. Junior Emmalee Dolfi had 2 runs, and junior Hannah Fandl and sophomores Paige Murray, Olivia Reeves, Amy Weinberg and Jessie Chattin each scored once. Schell also managed a complete game on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters to earn the victory,
“This (Mamaroneck) is probably the best team we’ve faced so far,” said Schell, who noted that it was a challenge to adjust to an early 2-0 Mamaroneck lead.
But Murray said it was too early in the game to get nervous.
“Mamaroneck was up 2-0 in the first inning, but that’s just the first inning,” she said.
Indeed, the Admirals swiftly came back. Midway into the second inning, Dolfi smacked a double, advancing Schell, who had singled, to third. The next batter, Weinberg, then singled to tie the game at 2, and two batters later, an illegal pitch from Mamaroneck advanced Chattin and Weinberg one base. They scored to stake Arlington to a 4-2 lead.
Mamaroneck head coach Diane Campbell said following the game that her team made “too many errors,” and it showed, as the Admirals continued to pile on.
Macak gave Arlington an even bigger lead with a three-run homer in the third inning, scoring Dolfi and Schell and giving the Admirals a 7-2 edge.
The team had a scary moment in the fourth inning when Reeves suffered a stinger in her hand. Despite the pain, she fought through and continued playing.
The team kept the pressure on, using timely hits and heads-up base-running in a high-scoring fourth inning. The team was winning 11-2 when Macak, Reeves and Alli Zamow each scored runs in rapid succession, finishing the scoring for Arlington and making it a 14-2 game.
“I thought the girls played well, but we still have some things to work on,” said Admirals head coach Nancy Schaeffer after the game.
The girls also dominated Saunders at home the next day, earning a 19-0 win on the strength of a well-pitched game by Dolfi, who struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Macak homered again, and Schell collected two hits to pace the Admirals.
