Obama can win in November

To the Editor:

It has been disappointing this past month to watch the Clinton campaign’s win-at-all-cost strategy take on such a negative tone. It does not help Sen. Clinton or the Democratic Party’s chances in November.

The latest argument of the Clinton campaign suggests that Sen. Obama simply cannot win in November because not enough white voters will support an African-American candidate. There is no doubt that decades of racist attitudes will make it difficult for many white voters to fairly evaluate Sen. Obama, especially after the out-of-context sound bites of the Rev. Wright’s sermons were aired.

Yet Obama’s success so far shows that America may have finally reached a point where there are a sufficient number of white voters, who in coalition with people of color, can elect the first non-white president. All Americans will benefit from such an achievement.
