Flower sale will give local agency a boost

To the Editor:

Everyone enjoys the beauty of flowers, but now there is evidence that flowers can do so much more than give us a few moments of visual satisfaction. Recent behavioral studies conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, have uncovered that just being around flowers triggers uplifting emotions, calms anxiety, lessens negativity, boosts energy levels and productivity and increases levels of compassion and kindness toward others.

Considering the fast-paced and highly stressed lifestyles most of us lead today, we all need ways to improve our emotional health and well-being. At the Mental Health Association, we strive to reduce stress year-round for those we serve, but are pleased to find that our annual Anemone Sale has a greater impact on people’s lives than we previously thought.

This year, the bouquets are fuller with 10 stems. Orders, at $10 per bouquet, may be placed with Kathleen Valentino at 473-2500, ext. 1305, until April 14. Flowers will be available for pick-up on Monday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 23, at the MHA building, 253 Mansion St., Poughkeepsie from noon to 5 p.m., and on Wednesday only at the MHA Library, 230 North Rd., Poughkeepsie from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vases are available for $3.50. Flowers are freshly cut/delivered each sale day.

On Wednesday, Secretary’s Day, deliveries will be provided to businesses ordering 12 or more bouquets.
