Bolin dedication is worth the effort

To the Editor:

I am one of several students from Poughkeepsie High School who attended a recent Board of Education meeting. After skimming through the agenda, I could tell this meeting was going to be pretty interesting.

One of the topics discussed was the decision of the Jane Bolin dedication. After listening to board members’ comments, it seemed they had lost interest in bringing the dedication to life. I got the impression that the main reason for not going through with it was because certain members wanted to avoid the “hassle” of tracking down Bolin’s family in order to receive permission. I felt this was by far no excuse. Bolin only has one son and the board knows he has a law firm in New York City. I don’t understand why the board feels tracking down one person, who they already have some information on, is such a difficult task. I feel Bolin is a great representation of what hard work and commitment can get a person. She is well deserving of the little effort it will take to honor her.

So I would like to thank board member Mr. Johnson for stepping up to the plate and taking the responsibility. I’m sure his time and effort will go toward a symbol of great meaning to many throughout the community.

Legislature committee work was impressive

To the Editor:

I recently attended a Dutchess County Legislature meeting for my Participation on Government class. This meeting was the first Legislative meeting I have attended, and my overall impressions of it were positive. I was never aware of all the committees that are in Poughkeepsie, or how much the people in the committees care so much and do so much to reach their goals. One particular committee that caught my attention was the environmental committee.

A presentation was given by a woman named Stephanie Mallozzi about the environment, but specifically about weeds and their doings. I found her presentation to be rather interesting, because I never know that people really could put so much information and time into one presentation hoping to change the environment on their own. Her interest was amazing; she saw what was harming the environment, and instead of just ignoring it, she put action into it.
