The drama and shenanigans during the 2007 local election process did not deter the Hyde Park citizenry who came out to vote and take part in our nation’s most fundamental expression of democracy.
Every other year, voters can judge the performance of our elected officials and weigh in on critical issues facing our town’s future. I’m pleased to note that this year, they were not caught napping.
Excellent candidates appeared on numerous party lines giving residents a chance to fully express themselves. Yes, there was a fair amount of door knocking, a torrent of mailings , thousands of road signs that seem to get more bedraggled with each rainfall and way too many automated phone calls. But the democratic process today almost demands these attentiongetting displays, however obnoxious, if only to pull us away from day-to-day cares.
Congratulations to all the voters who took part in your civic duty. Congratulations to the opposition who gave it the good fight. Congratulations to the Democrats’ A-Team, for all your hard work and dedication. You must continue to skillfully guide Hyde Park into the 21st century. You have earned our trust in your superb stewardship and commitment to open government in action, via televised Town Board meetings.
I urge all Hyde Parkers to get involved and help our leaders. Attend meetings and volunteer. We can all say, “I live in Hyde Park and am proud of it.”
