Elise Caron (Quebec, Canada) and Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie) led Marist with 14 points each as Marist dominated at Dartmouth 71-35 on Nov. 18. Caron added a team-high seven rebounds and six assists in the game.
Marist (3-1) controlled the first half, scoring the first seven points on a Viani three-pointer and jump shots from Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) and Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio). The lead would swell to 16 with 7:01 to go in the first half when Caron connected on her second three-pointer of the game to put Marist ahead 23-7. The Red Foxes led 32-14 at the half, holding Dartmouth to four of 25 shooting.
The Red Foxes scored the first five points of the second half on a Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) layup and a Meg Dahlman (Spencerport) three-pointer to go ahead 35-14. Dartmouth tried to get back in the game, but Marist was a perfect 14 of 14 from the free-throw line, which kept the lead in the 20s. The Red Foxes would go on a 13-2 run with 10:21 to go in the game, sparked by a Fitz layup. A Caron triple and Fitz layup would cap the run, which put Marist up 54-25 with 7:29 to go, their largest lead of the game. From there, the Red Foxes cruised to the 71-35 win, their third in a row.
Caron was four from five from three-point distance in the game, as Viani was two for five. Fitz finished in double figures for the third straight game, putting in 10 points and grabbing six rebounds. Flores added eight points and four assists. The Red Foxes held a 42-36 rebounding edge as Dahlman, Johnson, and Caron each had seven boards, with Smrdel retrieving six caroms. Marist assisted on 16 of its 24 baskets.
Dartmouth (0-3) was led by Kristen Craft’s 11 points, with Margaret Smith adding four points and a game-high nine rebounds. The Big Green was held to 22.4 percent shooting from the field.
Marist’s next game will be in Honolulu, Hawaii as they battled Utah on Nov. 22 at 8:30 p.m., after the Beat’s press time.
Men fall short against Temple
The Marist men’s basketball team completed play at the ESPNU O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Nov. 18, falling to Temple 73-69 in overtime in the seventh-place game. Senior guard Louie McCroskey (Bronx) led the Red Foxes (1-3) with 18 points.
“I thought Temple’s experience showed late in regulation, when they fought back,” Marist head coach Matt Brady said. “We played well in stretches, but not for a complete game.”
After falling behind by 10 in the first half, the Red Foxes fought back to tie the game at 24-24, but a late first-half surge gave the Owls a 34-28 halftime lead. Temple expanded the lead back to 10 early in the second half, but Marist went on an 18-4 run to take a 56-48 lead with 5:24 remaining. The Red Foxes held the Owls without a field goal for a stretch of 12:19 in the second half.
The Red Foxes took a 58-53 lead on a basket by McCroskey with 2:05 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Temple’s Luis Guzman converted a three-point play to cut the margin to two with 1:52 left in regulation. Two more free throws by Temple’s Mark Tyndale tied the game 18 seconds later. Tyndale would hit two free throws with 36 seconds to go to put Temple up 60-58, but a basket by red-shirt senior forward Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) tied the score at 60 apiece with 12 seconds to play and forced overtime.
With 1:57 to play in the overtime, a putback by senior forward Shae McNamara (Milwaukee, Wis.) tied the score at 67-67. A three-pointer by Temple’s Ryan Brooks on the next possession gave the Owls the lead for good, and Temple was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
“The difference in the game was our offensive inefficiency late in the game,” Brady said.
McCroskey was 6-for-17 from the field, hit a pair of three-pointers, was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and had a team-high two steals. Senior center Spongy Benjamin (St. Francis Village Erin, Trinidad) gave Marist two scorers in double digits with 10, and had a team-high eight rebounds seven of which came on the offensive end. Senior swingman Ben Farmer (Clinton, Conn.) finished with nine points on three three-pointers. For the game, Marist shot .391 from the field, but 9-for-16 from three-point range and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line.
Tyndale, who was 13-for-14 from the line, led Temple with 23 points. As a team, the Owls (1-3) hit 21 of the 23 free-throw attempts.

Along with Rolek, Dixon and Tarantello, seniors Ted Marak (Guilford, Conn.), Bryan Dixon (Staten Island) and Matthew Maynes (Tolland, Conn.) closed out their collegiate cross country careers on Saturday.
