The Marist women’s soccer team cruised by Canisius 3-0 on Nov. 4 to clinch the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title and the No. 1 seed going into the MAAC Tournament next weekend. Marist is hosting the tournament.
The Marist women dominated the match for the entire 90 minutes. They out-shot Canisius 18-6 and did not allow the Golden Griffins a shot until the 67th minute of the match.
In the seventh minute, the Red Foxes (10-4-3, 7-1-1 MAAC) went ahead for good when freshman Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) scored her eighth goal of the year off a pass from Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.).
The score moved to 2-0 when Teresa Ferraro (Floral Park) was able to head in a gorgeous corner kick off the foot of Maria Baez (Levittown) in the 15th minute. Ferraro scored again three minutes later for the final score of the match. Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale) assisted on the third goal. The two scores were the third and fourth of the year for Ferraro.
“We wanted to go out and set the tone early,” Marist head coach Elizabeth Roper said. “Once we got ahead, we got everyone in on the attack and really played well.”
Allison Lane got the shut out in net for Marist. She is now 7-3-3 on the year. The rookie made three saves on the day.
Once again, the Marist defense played nearly flawless soccer. Baez, Lauren Tillotson (Islip), Ashley Chase (Lumberton, N.J.), and senior captain Melanie Ondrejik thwarted any chance Canisius came close to having.
The Marist midfield also did a nice job keeping the ball in the Canisius zone all match.
The Red Foxes will face Niagara in the MAAC semifinals on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. In the other semifinal, Loyola (Md.) will take on Fairfield.
Roper and the rest of the Red Foxes are excited for the opportunity to play in the tournament hosted by Marist.
“We reached our goal of making the tournament and now we have to raise the bar. The regular season title is a great accomplishment but we still have two more wins to get,” she said.

Marist finished last season ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Women’s College Basketball Poll, and had received votes in that poll during last year’s regular season.
Marist will open its season on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Ohio State. The Buckeyes are ranked 16th in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls.
Dornton leads Marist marathon contingent
Kirk Dornton, a 2004 Marist College graduate and school record-holder, led a strong contingent of Marist Alumni Racing Team members at Sunday’s ING New York City Marathon.
Dornton placed 39th in the men’s race and was the 12th American finisher across the line with his personal-best time of 2 hours, 33 minutes and 25 seconds, which was two minutes faster than his previous marathon best, which he set at the 2006 Philadelphia Marathon. More than 38,000 runners participated in Sunday’s race.
Dornton still holds the Marist record in the 10,000-meter run, and is among the fastest Red Fox cross country runners all-time at Van Cortlandt Park. He is currently a science teacher at Arlington High School.
Two of Dornton’s college teammates also placed in the top 500 of Sunday’s race. Patrick Driscoll (Class of 2002) was 140th in the men’s race in 2:43:27, equalling his personal-best marathon time that he set at the 2006 NYC Marathon. Sean Hopkins (Class of 2005) was 397th in the men’s race in 2:53:07 in his debut over the 26.2-mile distance.
