Football Foxes Picked 2nd in Early Poll

Marist earned share of league title in 2006

The Marist football team was picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League preseason poll, released last week. The Red Foxes, who shared the league crown with Duquesne last season, garnered 10 points in the poll.

Duquesne, which has won at least a share of the last eight MAAC titles, was picked first in the poll with 15 points. The Dukes boast the MAAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in wide receiver Bruce Hocker and linebacker John Simmons, respectively.

The Red Foxes finished last season with a record of 4–7 overall and 3–1 in the MAAC, earning at least a share of their second MAAC title in program history. Marist also won the MAAC in 1994.

Marist, which has a 9–3 record in MAAC play the last three seasons, will begin its 2007 season at Lafayette on Sept. 1.

Men’s soccer picked seventh

The Marist men’s soccer team was picked to finish seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, which was released by the conference office last week. Marist picked up a total of 51 points in the poll.

Fairfield was chosen as the preseason favorite, nabbing 98 points. Forward Juan Gaviria of Saint Peter’s, who led the MAAC in scoring last season with 15 goals and three assists for a total of 33 points, was named MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Marist is set to begin its first season under head coach Matt Viggiano, a 1999 graduate of the college. The Red Foxes, who finished last season 6–9–1 overall and 3–5–1 in the MAAC, reached the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2005.

Women’s soccer tabbed sixth

The Marist women’s soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll, which was released last week. The Red Foxes return eight starters and 17 letter-winners from last year’s squad, which finished 3-5-1 in conference contests.

Marist garnered a total of 57 points in the poll, putting them just one behind Manhattan for fifth. Loyola, with a total of 93 points, was picked to finish first. Defending conference tournament champion Niagara was second with 86. Niagara’s Brittany Bisnott was chosen as MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Marist will serve as host for the MAAC Women’s Soccer Championships, which will be held Nov. 9 and 11.

Volleyballers picked fifth

The Marist volleyball team was picked to finish fifth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll, which was released last week by the conference office. Marist, which earned 58 points in the poll, earned a fifth-place finish in the 2006 regular season – its highest since joining the MAAC in 1997.

Fairfield, which won last year’s regular season title, was picked to finish first with 99 points. Siena, which won last year’s MAAC Tournament, was chosen to finish second with 91 points. Fairfield’s Lindsey Lee, who was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2006, was named Preseason Player of the Year.

Marist will begin its season at the Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso, Texas on Aug. 24–25. The Red Foxes finished last season 11–19 overall and 8–10 in the MAAC under head coach Tom Hanna, a 1991 Marist graduate.
